We all need breaks, from work, school, piano, and even our own families! I choose to spread these breaks throughout the year, rather than taking a big chunk in the summer. I believe this steady flow of work and rest creates a better environment for learning – better for our brains, emotions and practice habits.
Why summer piano lessons are a great idea:
- more time & fewer distractions – your brain has more space now that isn’t worried about tests & projects – take advantage of this space!
- use it or lose it – just like physical exercise, you naturally lose ground during long breaks
- maintaining habits is way easier than reconstructing them next fall
- great alternative to screens – fun, new projects keep kids motivated to spend time creating music
- a consistent work-rest flow improves focus, retention and enjoyment
Since summer days are flexible and varied, mornings can be a great time for music practice, before launching into other activities. Along with choosing a summertime practice plan, parents can also:
- keep listening and complimenting your child’s efforts and self-expression
- encourage casual opportunities to share music with friends and family
- whenever someone’s visiting, consider inviting your child to share a song
- during a play-date, kids could play favorite pieces or teach their friend a song
- cousin camps & grandma sleep-overs might include music time
- ideas for family together-time:
- sing around the campfire
- create new lyrics during a long car ride
- play music games
- turn on some tunes and dance!
